The Top 5 Things to Do Before Moving into Your New Home

Moving into your new home is an exciting time, but it can also be incredibly stressful if you’re not prepared for what comes with it. As your moving date approaches, your list of things to do will undoubtedly double in size as you remember all the small details that must be accounted for. To make your transition just that little bit smoother, we’ve put together our top five things you should do before you move house.

1. Update your address

This is an easy one to forget, but nonetheless a vital step of the process. This is best done as early as is practical, as the last thing you want to be doing is relying on the next owners or tenants of your previous house to forward you your mail (or worse – throw it out!). Just consider all the banks, subscriptions, insurance providers and other important companies who regularly send mail to your address – no doubt you will want to maintain this contact. It’s also a good idea to let the post office know you are moving house as they can help to forward on any mail you might have forgotten to change.

2. Pack a box with all the essentials

Unless searching through boxes and boxes of everything you own is your idea of a good night, you’ll want to pack one that is specifically reserved for your first-night essentials. Towels, toiletries, pyjamas, sheets, toilet paper, phone charges – any must-have item that you use on a daily basis should be packed for easy access when you need it most.

3. Take measurements

Before you begin furniture shopping or deciding which of your current items you want to take with you, make sure you measure your new space. This is mostly applicable to larger pieces of furniture such as dining tables, lounge suites and drawers that might look too clunky in your new room. This will give you enough time to figure out what you will need to replace before you make the move and get any nasty surprises.

4. Clean before you move

If you have access to your new home before your actual moving date, it’s a good idea to do a thorough clean of the property before you begin hauling furniture and boxes through the door. This will save you the trouble of doing it when you’re exhausted after a few days of sorting through everything you own.

5. Sort out your insurance

This is a big one, as you want to be covered from the moment you move out of your old home and into your new one. Contact your insurance company ahead of time and organise for your current policy to expire the after you move out, and for the new one to start the day before you move in. This way, your home and belongings are completely covered the entire time.
